FREQUENTLY
ASKED QUESTIONS CONCERNING PORTABLE AIR CONDITIONERS |

Which
end of the exhaust hose applies to the unit and
which end applies to the window or wall? |
The flat, rectangular end fits into the unit; the slanted
end fits into the window.
(NOTE : Both ends are identical, except the end that fits
into the window has an extra attachment.) |
Can
the exhaust hose be fed into an existing duct? |
Yes. |
Can
the exhaust hose be lengthened? |
Yes, however, the unit will not function as efficiently, and
an additional exhaust fan at the end of the extension may
be necessary to aid exhaust. |
Is
the exhaust from the unit harmful? |
No, the exhaust is only hot air.
Can
the unit be used without hooking up the exhaust hose? |
| |
No; although the unit will run without using the exhaust hose,
it will not function properly as the hot air normally exhausted
by aid will be recycled into the room. |

I do not have
a window or a door in which to install the exhaust hose,
where else can it be installed? |
| |
It can also be installed through a wall, or into existing
duct work.
Why
doesn’t the air feel as cool as a window unit? |
The temperature output of the window unit and the portable
unit are the same; however, the velocity of the air blowing
out of the vent of the portable unit is lower to reduce the
amount of noise produced by the unit. (NOTE: While most of
the window unit sits outside of the window, the portable unit
sits within the space being cooled.) |
The
unit is blowing cool air, but why isn’t the room being
cooled? |
Check for hot air leakage into the room; check that the exhaust
hose has been properly installed (NOTE: If the exhaust hose
has been extended, an additional exhaust fan may be needed
at the exhaust end of the hose.); check that the size of the
room being cooled is within specified parameters delineated
on the specification page of the manual; there may be too
many bodies in the room; there may be excessive sunlight flooding
the room. |
Why
is the unit not cooling the office and/or computer room? |
In any such environment: doors are being opened and closed
as people come and go; office machines (i.e. computers, copiers,
coffee makers, etc.) give off excessive heat; shades or blinds
of large windows may be drawn. An evaluation of the heat load
by an air conditioning professional may be necessary to determine
how many units are needed to cool the environment. |
What
should be the temperature of the air emitting from the cooling
vent? |
The air blowing out of the cooling vent is directly related
to the ambient temperature of the air in the room, which is
being drawn through the filters and into the unit: said should
be at least 20ºF (6.7ºC) cooler. |
Can
the unit be plugged into a regular 15 amp outlet? |
Yes, our units typically pull only 7 amps when running; however,
do not insert more than one air conditioner plug into a common
double outlet or surge protector. |
How much water
does the unit hold? |
Our units hold from 2 to 5 liters (5.3 quarts).
How
often does the unit have to be drained? |
It depends upon the humidity: at a humidity of 70%, the unit
typically pulls about 12 liters (12.7 quarts) of water in
a 24 hour period; as the humidity increases, the amount of
water pulled will increase. |
Can
the drain tube be left in to drain the water continuously? |
Yes, the unit may run a bit hot, but it will not be affected.
(NOTE: Please ensure that the drain tube is fed into an ample
source of drainage.) |
Can
the drain tube be put into the drain bottle for direct drainage? |
No; although the unit will function, by bypassing the internal
float valve, the unit will not automatically turn off when
the drain bottle is full, resulting in spillage and possible
flooring damage. |
Why
does the unit make a bumping sound from time to time? |
The bumping sound is either the compressor starting up or
shutting down: once the room being cooled has reached the
desired temperature, the compressor will run in on and off
cycles to maintain the set temperature. |
Why
has the unit stopped blowing cold air and exhaust, when the
room is still hot? |
The exhaust hose was either improperly installed or is clogged;
such will cause the hot air normally emitted from the exhaust
hose to back up and overheat the compressor, which will trip
the safety circuit to shut the compressor down; said circuit
will reset itself when the air has cooled and the compressor
will restart. (NOTE: This problem will recur unless the inadequate
exhaust stream has been addressed.) |

Can a piece
of wire mesh or an exhaust baffle be installed on the end
of the exhaust hose to prevent insects and/or water from entering
the hose? |
Yes, those typically used on the outside of a kitchen exhaust
work well.
Can a three
to two adapter be used to plug in the unit? |
Yes, but an electrician should install the appropriate plug
to assure proper grounding.
